Photo Shoot 5

This photo shoot was about capturing animals adapting to life in a public park. The animals in this public park go about their daily routines and even interact with people. I tried to take pictures of the animals where a hint of color would stand out which I them played with in photoshop to highlight the pops of color.

These are my first attempts at creating anything in Illustrator. I started by creating designs then included a color palettes. The top image represents a more safe palette and color pattern. In the bottom image I was going for fun, bright colors.

Triptych

Here is an example of a triptych using similar shades of light blues and pinks. I noticed as I moved through this shoot I captured a lot of pastel colors so I decided to create my triptych with these images.

Photo Shoot 4 - Colors

Below are examples of colors I found in my apartment.

Burnt colors blending together.

Multi-colored images with print for graphics.

Bright colors for a fun display.

Photo Shoot 2

I decided not to use any of the images I took for this 2nd assignment because I'm not happy with space and lighting used for these images. Here are 3 images from the assignment "the life of a grad student".

Assignment 2 (photoshop)

I took this picture at the Brooklyn Botanic Garden.

The photo-shopped image is on the top left and the original image is on the bottom right. I added several flowers to the image on the left.

Critique/Analysis

The New York Times

I'm not sure if anyone has noticed The NY Times' new ad campaign for their subscription based model plan, but it is awful. I didn't even realize they were ads for the Times for quite some time. The ads are very flashy with images of artists and digital images. I will have to take a picture of these ads the next time I see them in the subway. They don't even look like ads for a newspaper, let alone the Times. Perhaps, they are trying to capture a younger audience and show they are with the times, no pun intended. I'm just not quite sure.

Companies and Charities

I like the idea of associating a company with charities. I recently received and e-mail from GAP for a Give and Get Giveaway where you were able to donate to one of five charities. The way it worked was you select a charity, send an invite to your friends and 5% all purchases with your purchase code go the charity you selected and you receive 30% off all items. This is great marketing strategy. Consumers receive a great deal while knowing part of the proceeds are going to support a better cause. Consumers then tend to remember these actions and have a position reaction to the brands.

Creating a brand:

I recently watched The Social Network and there is one scene in particular with Mark Zuckerberg and Eduardo that really stands out to me and relates to what we are reviewing in class. The two of them are arguing about the future of facebook and how & when to make a profit. Eduardo wants to start approaching advertising agencies early on in the beginning stages of the company and mark thinks that is ridiculous. He argues they don't even know what the company is yet. This is running theme through the first half of the film. I don't know how true this part of the story line is, but Mark makes a valid point. You can't jump ahead and try to market a company without first understanding what the product is and what it will represent.

Branding/Logos - What doesn't work:

Comedy Central changed their logo on Jan. 1st. They literally spent millions of dollars towards PR companies to create a logo and in the end they opted for an in-house logo re-design that looks similar to Coco Chanel, the FCC and most noticeably the Copyright Symbol shown below respectively. This does't work for me for two reasons. 1. The new logo is clearly too similar to other famous logos. 2. I think it is too corporate and boring for Comedy Central.

I work at a staffing agency in Union Square and I am not fond of our logo. The agency is called Atrium Staffing and I have no idea what this logo is supposed to symbolize. I would love to change the logo. I've also included the link to the company website to show how the logo is used on the site.

Typography:
I've noticed a lot of advertisements for upcoming movies and television shows use white serif font. I've also noticed some of these same ads use white serif font with a bright color. For example, white and blue seems to be a common color right now for shows such as Royal Pains and White Collar and movies, such as Just Go With It, which is an example of a layout I don't like.

Another example of this is The Adjustment Bureau posters.

Another typography trend I've come across in relation to posters for movies is in fonts for animated films where they use "fun" fonts. An example of this is Gnomeo and Juliet.

Photo Shop Gone Wrong:

Has anyone else noticed the end of Bieber's left eyebrow is missing? I highly doubt his eyebrow looks like that; although it could explain his "1990s boy band meets BK hipster haircut". Also, and I'm sure I'm looking at this too much, but it doesn't seem to his own hand in the photo. It looks like someone else is pulling him from the side.

I also wanted to share the above Kardashian ad for their new show. Now we all know these ladies are not this washed out. The lighting on this ad really bothers me.

Branding/Logos:
In the last few months 2 major companies have attempted to change their logo. One of these companies reverted back to their original logo within a week due to an exorbitant amount of negative backlash. The other still stands by their new and "improved" logo. These 2 companies are GAP and Starbucks, respectively. In my opinion, the reason GAP's new logo failed is because there was no need for a change and it didn't relate with the brand. GAP is a staple in the clothing industry and has a solid following. They weren't trying to re-invent themselves when they announced their new logo. Starbucks, on the other hand, designed a new logo in celebration of their 40th anniversary. Starbucks has received negative feedback on their new logo, which will be rolling out nationwide in March, but I think in the end it will stay for two reasons. First, at this stage of the game they are a well known and dominent player in the coffee industry. Consumers are familiar with the brand. Second, Starbucks has changed their logo several times in the last 40 years and each time it is a subtle change with the latest version having the company named removed.
